OUR NAME

“The person who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The person who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has seen before.”

~ Albert Einstein

Why ‘Coach Road’?

Some say it was inspired by American pioneers whose stagecoaches symbolized optimism and determination. Others insist that Coach Road Capital evolved from Main Street Capital (our predecessor company) because it better reflects our independent approach.

These theories have two things in common. First, they both highlight important parts of our culture. Second, they’re both wrong. Our true origin story can be traced to a single person – a wandering poet-philosopher by the name of William Hugh Nelson.

The name journey began in the usual way. Our first stop was Merriam Webster, but the thesaurus only bored us. Then we tried an English-to-Latin translator where a dead language led to a dead end. Out of ideas, we turned to Willie for inspiration.

You see, we really like Willie, and we really like a particular song about a horseback ride along some dusty old stagecoach roads. The lyrics caught our attention because we thought they’d look good on a business card…that they fit so nicely with our culture and history was a happy coincidence. Thus, Coach Road Capital.

It turns out that picking a company name is a lot like picking investments…you often find the best candidates where you least expect.
